Movica 2008: New Vision, Hot Light and Fluid Pictures

What is Movica:

Movica is a micro-festival of performative video, visuals, microcinema, motion graphics, and other new and experimental moving pictures that will happen as part of Artica. Contributions are sought from around the globe, and selections will be made by a panel of three local jurors. Movica jurors will judge each contribution during the event. Up to four merit awards of $50 will be granted.*

What is Artica:

Artica, the outdoor multi-media art festival developed to provide the St. Louis metropolitan area with the opportunity to gather as a community through creative self-expression, takes place Saturday and Sunday, October 11 and 12. The festival begins Saturday, October 11 at noon and runs until midnight. Festivities pick back up at noon on Sunday, October 12 and will wrap up at dusk. Artica’s development is as fluid as the river it celebrates, and its scope depends upon the involvement of the community. Did we mention that it’s a free event? There is no admission charge for Artica 2008 The New World, Come Hell or High Water.

i for one would definitely be glad to hear that the movica screenings would be later in the evening after the burning... especially because i will be part of the shamanic ceremony and will also be submitting video work!!!

Hi Daniel

Just wanted to get some scheduling straight. You mentioned in your blog that Movica will start 45 minutes after sunset. I'm just going to give you a rundown of events because we may have some coflict:

Sunset is at 6:32 pm
6:30pm Shamanic Ceremony on the Overlook Stage
8:00pm The Lady Burns

Do you want to overlap Movica with the Our Lady of Artica burn or do you want to wait until its over. If you're flexible I think this is a good idea. Nita

hi daniel,
what exactly is the application process for movica? i have some video work i would like to submit. are there guidelines as to length and content of the submissions?

also, i will be participating in a dance performance at the festival at 7:30pm on the 11th... is there a possibility of my performance overlapping with movica? (i'm not sure what time sundown is considered to be.)

thanks for your time,

greer lange

Bill-

A VOB file should be fine. We'll be using Macs to play back all submissions, and I believe the latest version of QuickTime Player will play a VOB file without problems. If not, I know for certain that a VOB file can be converted to a format that will definitely work.

If you wanted to submit something created with Powerpoint, I'd prefer a movie file generated from Powerpoint, but if the performative aspect is important to the work, then we could probably make it work.

As for thematic collections of .JPG files arranged as a s slide show, the short answer is "No." You are more than welcome to generate a movie file of such a slide show, but we can't make the aesthetic calls for you. You have to do that.

As I mentioned, everything will be played back using either a DVD player or a MacBook running the latest version of QuickTime Player. Whatever freely available codec you wish to use is fine. Whatever you think will best show off your work. Unfortunately, this year we are not equipped to display content in HD, but that is a goal for next year.

Feel free to give me a call at 314-485-4925 if you want to discuss anything with me in person. You can also drop any physical media in the postal mail, and send it to:

Daniel -
Hello and thanks for organizing the Movica visual efforts for Artica.
I have a few basic questions about file formats and the like that am hoping you can answer.

1.) Can you accept a .VOB file in the 5 minute, 127 MB size range?
2.) Are MS Powerpoint presentations acceptable?
3.) Are mixed yet thematic collections of .JPG slides a good way to contribute? If so, will you animate/motionize/make moving the images as provided?
4.) What are your generally preferred size and file types that would make it easier for you to receive and use for Movica?

Thanks,
Bill Kranz
or mix in slide transitions on your own accord?
